Towards the "ideal reader" through reading promotion

On the question of what reading promotion can achieve, the Academy for Reading Promotion of Stiftung Lesen has interestingly derived three aspects from the definition of the ideal reader: „The ideal reader reads well, gladly and a great deal."

So those who need reading promotion are those who read badly, reluctantly and little, and the three aspects that reading promotion can work on would be reading ability, motivation to read and how often one reads.

With the reading programmes

we offer a comprehensive range for children and young people from 3 to 16 and try to encourage exactly that group to read a great deal. Where that succeeds, reading ability is greater than among „duty readers" who read only what school and other authorities expect of them.

  • People who read a lot have a better command of the cultural technique of reading; they read faster and grasp the essentials better and more quickly.
  • People who read a lot learn more, and more deeply, about the world — above all compared with those who use almost only entertainment media such as television or computer games.
  • People who read a lot widen their vocabulary in the language faster (native speakers included); the vocabulary they have as adults is larger.

Reading promotion is particularly important for migrants in supporting language acquisition and knowledge of the country. Only through reading do they come to know the written language of the country they have come to well enough.
